Load Shedding Survival: Designing a Backup System That Actually Works

Most “UPS systems” disappoint because they were never designed around real loads. Here is a design method that works.

1. List Your Essential Loads

Fans (75W each), LED lights (10W), fridge (150–300W cycling), router, TV. A realistic essential load is 600–1,000W — not the 3,000W people guess.

2. Pick Backup Duration

Multiply load by the longest outage: 800W × 6h = 4.8kWh of usable storage → one 5kWh lithium battery or two 185Ah tubular batteries.

3. The Inverter Ties It Together

A hybrid inverter charges from solar first, grid second, and switches to battery instantly on outage. Look for a 10–20ms transfer time so computers never blink.

4. Do Not Skip Protection
