A solar system without correct protection is a fire risk. Breakers isolate faults, protect cables, and make maintenance safe.
DC Breakers
Installed between panels and the inverter. DC arcs do not self-extinguish like AC, so DC-rated breakers (500V–1000V DC) are mandatory — never use an AC breaker on the PV side. For a typical string, a 2P 500V/1000V DC MCB rated 1.25× the string current is correct.
AC Breakers
Installed between the inverter and your distribution board. Size at 1.25× the inverter output current — e.g. a 6kW single-phase inverter (~27A) pairs with a 32A AC MCB.
Extra Protection Worth Having
- SPDs (surge protectors) on both DC and AC sides — essential in storm-prone areas.
- RCBO/RCCB for earth-leakage protection of household circuits.
- Changeover / MTS switches for generator integration.
